Welcome

Welcome to the wiki page for the University of Maine at Farmington's Education Center. This project expands the sustainability efforts of the university through multi-level curriculum for UMF students, pre K-12 teachers and students, and community members. We will attempt to do this by:
  • providing information on green features of LEED certified buildings
  • sharing ways to make a positive impact on our own homes
  • reaching out to all audiences through publications, statewide meetings, and conference presentations
  • offering tours to community individuals and organizations
  • using the Education Center as a teaching tool for area teachers
  • establishing a culture of environmental sustainability

USGBC & LEED

The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) has developed a rating and certification system. LEED, to standardize the design, development, and implementation of green building practices & technologies that incorporate sustainable materials and system.
Click here to learn more about USGB, LEED, and how the UMF Education Center measures up!

You can also access information about the Education Center HERE. Check back often as information on products and technologies, as well as photographs and ideas, are added to the site. For virtual tours of some areas of the Education Center, click on http://edcenter.umf.maine.edu/videos/.

The tours are available to anyone who is interested, student groups and community groups are encouraged.

To schedule a tour, look at the tour schedule ,pick the time that works best for you, and please email Kelci O'Neill (kelci.oneill@maine.edu).
If none of these times work, please email anyway and you will be set up with an alternative tour guide.

We can come to you!

We also offer presentations about the building and it's features to schools (all grades) and community groups around the area via our "Tour to You" program. Please email Kelci O'Neill (kelci.oneill@maine.edu), with any interest, thank you!

Many UMF groups work together to promote sustainability -- one such group is the SCC, Sustainable Campus Coalition. The SCC collaborates with staff, faculty, and community organizations to reduce enegy use and carbon footprint, to minimize waste, and to educate one another about sustainability. In the spring of 2010, the SCC worked with the PHY:116 (Physics for Life Sciences) class and interested students, under the guidance of Dr. Paul Stancioff, to explore energy-efficient upgrades for 101 South Street, a residential-style campus building. You can read more about this project by clicking HERE.

Community members may attend the weekly meetings every Monday at 11:45 in the Education Center room 113. Any concerns that you would like to brought up the weekly meeting, please email Valerie Huebner (huebner@maine.edu), so it can be placed on the meeting agenda.
